The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 3:32 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, James Bezan, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Alex Atamanenko, André Bellavance, James Bezan, Guy Lauzon, Larry Miller, Jean-Yves Roy, Hon. Carol Skelton, Lloyd St. Amand and Brian Storseth.

 

Acting Members present: Hon. Charles Hubbard for Paul Steckle, John Maloney for Ken Boshcoff and Hon. Geoff Regan for Paul Steckle.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mathieu Frigon, Analyst; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Principal.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the following calendar be adopted:

November 21, 2007 - Meeting with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency;

November 26, 2007 - Meeting with Cattle and Pork Industry

November 28, 2007 - Meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Agrifood

December 3, 5, 10 and 12, 2007 - Meetings on the new Agricultural Policy Framework.

 

At 4:04 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

 

At 4:05 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to the motion of Larry Miller.
 

Larry Miller moved, — That the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food request that the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food conduct a full review of all inspection fees charged by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and; that this information be used by the Minister to investigate possible options for the government to deal with the inequity between what Canadian Livestock Producers and Packing Plants pay for inspection fees as compared to their counterparts in the United States.

 

Geoff Regan moved, — That the motion be amended by adding between the words “be” and “used” the following: “shared with the Committee and”.

 

After debate, the question was put on the amendment of Geoff Regan and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 11; NAYS: 0.

The motion, as amended, read as follows:
