The Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security met at 3:31 p.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Garry Breitkreuz, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Garry Breitkreuz, Gord Brown, Joe Comartin, Carole Freeman, Laurie Hawn, Mark Holland, Susan Kadis, Dave MacKenzie, Serge Ménard and Rick Norlock.

 

Acting Members present: Omar Alghabra for Hon. Raymond Chan and Derek Lee for Hon. Irwin Cotler.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Philip Rosen, Principal; Wade Riordan-Raaflaub, Analyst.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced its study of matters related to the firearms registry.
 

Serge Ménard moved, — That the Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security request that the government retain the firearms registry in its entirety as it was as of May 16, 2006, while maintaining the system of free permit renewal.

Debate arose thereon.

 

Susan Kadis moved, — That the motion be amended by adding after the word “renewal” the following: “and that the Chair or Vice-chair of the Standing Committee report to the House within 5 sitting days of the adoption of this motion“.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the amendment of Susan Kadis and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 4.

 

After debate, the question was put on the motion, as amended, and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 4.

 

At 4:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
