The Standing Committee on National Defence met at 3:39 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Rick Casson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Claude Bachand, Dawn Black, Robert Bouchard, Blaine Calkins, Rick Casson, Hon. Ujjal Dosanjh, Cheryl Gallant, Laurie Hawn, Russ Hiebert and Wajid Khan.

 

Acting Members present: Sukh Dhaliwal for Hon. Joe McGuire and Marcel Proulx for John Cannis.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: James Cox, Analyst.

 

Appearing: Hon. Peter MacKay, Minister of Foreign Affairs.

 

Witnesses: Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Foreign Affairs): Wendy Gilmour, Deputy Director. Department of Foreign Affairs: James Fox, Director General. As an individual: Christian Schmidt, Parliamentary State Secretary to the German Federal Minister of Defence. Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany: Sabine Sparwasser, Chargé d'affaires.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on May 16, 2006, the Committee resumed its study of Canadian Forces in Afghanistan.
 

The Minister made a statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:44 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee met with representatives of the delegation from Germany.
 

Christian Schmidt made a statement and, with Sabine Sparwasser, answered questions.

 

At 5:25 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
