The Standing Committee on Official Languages met at 9:02 this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Steven Blaney, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Steven Blaney, Sylvie Boucher, Hon. Michael D. Chong, Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Harvey, Luc Malo, Brian Murphy and Richard Nadeau.

 

Acting Members present: Jacques Gourde for Pierre Lemieux.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Jean-Rodrigue Paré, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Fédération des associations de juristes d'expression française de Common Law inc: Louise Aucoin, President. Canadian Bar Association: Tamra Thomson, Director, Legislation and Law Reform; Melina Buckley, Representative. University of Moncton: Michel Doucet, Professor , Expert in language rights, Law Faculty.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of the Court Challenges Program.
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

Yvon Godin moved, — That the Standing Committee on Official Languages invite the Honourable Bev Oda, Minister of Canadian Heritage; the Honourable Josée Verner, Minister for La Francophonie and Official Languages; and the Honourable Rob Nicholson, Minister of Justice, to explain to the Committee at its next meeting on Thursday, June 21, 2007, or in September, 2007, the reasons why the Court Challenges Program was cancelled in September 2006.

Debate arose thereon.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to on the following recorded division: YEAS: Jean-Claude D'Amours, Raymonde Folco, Yvon Godin, Luc Malo, Richard Nadeau — 5; NAYS: Sylvie Boucher, Michael D. Chong, Jacques Gourde — 3.

 

It was agreed, — That the budget of $ 7100 for the witnesses who appeared to explain the decision to name Shane Doan Captain of Team Canada at the World Championships be adopted.

 

At 11:04, the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
