Consultations on Employability in Canada

Ottawa, June 22, 2006 -

The House of Commons Standing Committee on Human Resources, Social Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities will be holding public hearings on matters relating to employability in Canada from Monday, June 1 to Friday, November 23, 2006. There will be hearings in Ottawa in spring 2006 and in autumn, from Monday, September 18 to Friday, October 6. The Committee will travel to eastern Canada (St. John’s, Halifax, Montreal and Toronto) in October and to western Canada (Vancouver, Calgary and Saskatoon) during the month of November.

The following motion was adopted by the Committee on June 1, 2006:

That, pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee undertake an examination of employability issues in Canada, such as workers mobility, seasonal workers, older workers, skilled worker shortages, workplace literacy and the recognition of foreign credentials.

If you wish to appear before of the Committee this fall, please advise us by indicating the city of your choice, no later than Friday, July 7, 2006. All briefs or PowerPoint presentations must be submitted no later than Wednesday, September 6, 2006, so that they can be translated.

All briefs submitted should be less than ten (10) pages long and must include an executive summary of one (1) page prioritizing your proposals. Briefs should be provided in electronic form whenever possible.

We will attempt to hear from the largest possible number of witnesses in the time available to us, but we cannot guarantee that all witnesses requesting to appear can be heard. Nonetheless, all briefs will be submitted to the Committee members.
