NEWS RELEASE
HOUSE OF COMMONS FINANCE COMMITTEE COMPLETES ITS 2006 PRE-BUDGET CONSULTATION HEARINGS
Ottawa, October 24, 2006 -
Today, Mr. Brian Pallister, M.P., Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Finance, expressed his appreciation to all Canadians and Parliamentarians who participated in the Committee’s pre-budget consultations for 2006.
“I must begin by extending my sincerest thanks to all who participated in the Committee’s pre-budget hearings since, quite simply, the exercise would be meaningless without their participation. Hearing about the priorities of Canadians, and about what they would like to see included in the next federal budget, are a vital part of the budget-making process. All Committee members appreciate the time that is taken by witnesses to prepare briefs and, in the majority of cases, to appear before the Committee,” said Mr. Pallister.
“In our travels across Canada – which took us to Whitehorse, Vancouver, Fort McMurray, Saskatoon and Portage la Prairie in the west, and to St. John’s, Halifax, Quebec City and Toronto in the east – and in our Ottawa-based hearings, the Committee received many innovative proposals designed to contribute to the enhanced global competitiveness of our nation. In total, we received input from about 400 groups and individuals,” Mr. Pallister continued.
Mr. Pallister concluded: “The input received will be invaluable as the Committee considers recommendations for budgetary action and drafts its pre-budget report, which must be tabled in the House of Commons by 4 December 2006. I would like to thank my Committee colleagues for their diligent participation to date, and for the continued dedication as we draft and consider the Committee’s report.”
