The Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics met at 9:04 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Vice-Chair, David Tilson, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sukh Dhaliwal, Carole Lavallée, Pat Martin, Glen Douglas Pearson, Scott Reid, Bruce Stanton, David Tilson, Dave Van Kesteren, Robert Vincent and Mike Wallace.

 

Acting Members present: Omar Alghabra for Tom Wappel and Hon. Geoff Regan for Hon. Jim Peterson.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Kristen Douglas, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: Jennifer Stoddart, Privacy Commissioner; Wayne Watson, Director General, Investigation and Inquiries Branch; Carman Baggaley, Senior Strategic Policy Analyst; Steve Johnston, Senior Security and Technology Advisor; Lisa Campbell, Senior Legal Counsel.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and the motion adopted by the Committee on April 24, 2007, the Committee commenced its study on Identity Theft.
 

Jennifer Stoddart made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

On motion of Carole Lavallée, it was agreed, — That the Committee proceed to other business at approximately 10:30 a.m. this day.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

At 10:27 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:30 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Carole Lavallée moved, — That the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics urgently address the internal report by the Department of Foreign Affairs entitled Afghanistan 2006: Good Governance, Democratic Development and Human Rights, a report that the government claimed did not exist and took every step to prevent its release but was finally forced by the Information Commissioner to reconsider and then published the report, but in a highly censored form.

 

By unanimous consent, the motion was withdrawn.

 

At 10:38 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 10:39 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Mike Wallace gave notice of motion.

 

At 10:43 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
