The Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development met in a televised session at 9:35 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bob Mills, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Nathan Cullen, Hon. Mark Eyking, Hon. John Godfrey, Luc Harvey, Marcel Lussier, Bob Mills, Mario Silva, Maurice Vellacott, Mark Warawa and Jeff Watson.

 

Acting Members present: Christian Ouellet for Bernard Bigras and Francis Scarpaleggia for Pablo Rodriguez.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Sam Banks, Analyst; Tim Williams, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Environmental Defense (U.S.A.): Richard A. Denison, Senior Scientist, Washington, D.C. Office. Canadian Chemical Producers Association: Gordon Lloyd, Vice-President, Technical Affairs. Industry Coordinating Group for CEPA: Jack Soule, Executive Director. Clean Production Action: Beverly Thorpe, International Director. Environmental Working Group (U.S.A.): Kenneth Cook, President, Washington, D.C. Office.

 

Participants present: Department of the Environment: John Arseneau, Director General, Science and Risk Assessment, Science and Technology Branch. Department of Health: Steve Clarkson, Director.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and section 343 of the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, the Committee resumed the statutory review of the Act - International Activities and Assessment of Substances.
 

Richard A. Denison, Gordon Lloyd, Jack Soule, Beverly Thorpe and Kenneth Cook made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

 

At 10:52 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
