The Standing Committee on International Trade met in camera at 9:15 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Leon Benoit, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Guy André, Leon Benoit, Ron Cannan, Serge Cardin, Hon. Mark Eyking, Helena Guergis, Peter Julian, Hon. Dominic LeBlanc, John Maloney, Ted Menzies and Lui Temelkovski.

 

Acting Members present: Ed Fast for Pierre Lemieux.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Peter Berg, Analyst; Michael Holden, Analyst; Elizabeth Kuruvila, Analyst.

 
The Committee proceeded to the consideration of matters related to Committee business.
 

It was agreed, — That the future business items be considered by the full committee but that the Committee retain its Sub-committee on Procedure and Agenda.

 

It was agreed, — 1) That the Clerk provide the Committee with information on the motions on the time allotted for the questioning of witnesses adopted in other standing committees; and

2) That the Committee discuss a revised motion for time allotment for the questioning of witnesses at a future business meeting.

 

It was agreed, — That the Library of Parliament Analysts prepare a summary of the discussion held at this meeting including future Canadian trade and investment opportunities.

 

It was agreed, — 1) That the Committee invite the Minister of International Trade, the Hon. David Emerson, to appear before the Committee on Thursday, October 5, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., or at the earliest opportunity, to discuss Efficiency Measures, financial priorities of the Department, future trade negotiations as well as other matters including those related to Bill C-24; and

2) That if Bill C-24 is referred to the Committee before October 5, 2006, the Committee forego the appearance of the Minister and proceed to study Bill C-24 in which instance the first meeting on the Bill would consist of a Departmental briefing by officials; and

3) That if the Minister is not available and Bill C-24 is not yet referred to the Committee, the Committee invite representatives from the Canadian International Trade Tribunal to appear before it on Thursday, October 5, 2006, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., regarding dumped and subsidized import, and domestic producers.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee hold round table discussions with representatives from the Canadian industry sector and Federal Government officials to seek their views on Canadian competitiveness and global market opportunities for Canada.

 

At 11:00 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
