The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, for the purpose o electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Rod Bruinooge, Jean Crowder, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Inky Mark, Colin Mayes, Gary Merasty, Hon. Anita Neville and Todd Norman Russell.

 

Acting Members present: Brian Storseth for Maurice Vellacott.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Mary Hurley, Analyst; Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development : Daniel Ricard, A/Senior Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Strategic Direction; Eric Guimond, A/Director, Strategic Research and Analysis Directorate; Sandra Ginnish, Director General, Treaties, Research, International and Gender Equality Branch; Sacha Senécal, Strategic Research Manager, Strategic Research and Analysis Treaties, Research, International and Gender Equality Branch.

 
Maurice Vellacott having submitted a letter of resignation as Chair of the Committee, the Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of Harold Albrecht, it was agreed, — That Colin Mayes be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

Marc Lemay moved, — That the Committee send a letter to the Minister of Indian Affairs congratulating him on the approval of a final Indian Residentials Schools Settlement Agreement and the immediate launching of an advance payment program.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee proceeded to a briefing by officials from the Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development.
 

Eric Guimond made a presentation and answered questions.

 

At 5:30 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
