The Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development met at 3:29 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Colin Mayes, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Harold Albrecht, Steven Blaney, Rod Bruinooge, Jean Crowder, Nancy Karetak-Lindell, Marc Lemay, Yvon Lévesque, Inky Mark, Colin Mayes, Gary Merasty, Hon. Anita Neville and Todd Norman Russell.

 

In attendance: Library of Parliament: Marlisa Tiedemann, Analyst.

 

Witnesses: Assembly of First Nations: Phil Fontaine, National Chief; Richard Jock, Chief Executive Officer; Angus Toulouse, Ontario Regional Chief, Ontario; Bob Watts, Chief of Staff, Office of the National Chief. Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami of Canada: Richard Paton, Director, Social Economic Department.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed a briefing on Education of Aboriginal People.
 

Marc Lemay moved, — That, pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee recommend that the government vote in favour of the United Nations Draft Declaration on the Rights of Aboriginal Peoples at the next working session of the Human Rights Council.

That the Committee adopt this recommendation in a report to the House and that the Chair table this report in the House.

 

The question was put on the motion and it was agreed to, by a show of hands: YEAS: 7; NAYS: 0.

 

Phil Fontaine made an opening statement and answered questions.

 

At 4:38 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:44 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 

Richard Patton made an opening statement and answered questions.

 

At 5:28 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
