Wednesday, June 4, 2003

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Larry Bagnell, Paul Crête, Cheryl Gallant, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Brian Masse, Dan McTeague, Hon. Gilbert Normand, James Rajotte, Brent St. Denis, Paddy Torsney and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Members present: Rob Merrifield for Brian Fitzpatrick and Judy Sgro for Andy Savoy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Geoffrey P. Kieley and Dan Shaw, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canada's Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies: Murray J. Elston, President, Rx&D; Paul Lucas, President and Chief Executive Officer of GlaxoSmithKline; Gerry McDole, President and Chief Executive Office of AstraZeneca Canada Inc.; Jean-François Leprince, President of Aventis Pharma; Janet Lambert, President of BIOTECanada; Adrienne Blanchard, Legal Counsel from Gowlings Lafleur Henderson.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the Automatic Injunction Provisions in the Patented Medicine (Notice of Compliance) Regulations of the Patent Act.

Paul Lucas, Jean-François Leprince and Janet Lambert each made an opening statement and, with Gerry McDole, Murray Elston and Adrienne Blanchard answered questions.

At 4:36 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:56 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 5:56 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
