Monday, May 12, 2003

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Walt Lastewka, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Paul Crête, Brian Fitzpatrick, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Walt Lastewka, Serge Marcil, Brian Masse, Dan McTeague, James Rajotte and Brent St. Denis.

Acting Member present: Dave Chatters for Cheryl Gallant.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the “Association québécoise des indépendants du pétrole”: René Blouin, President-Executive Director; Pierre Crevier, President of "Les Pétroles Crevier" and Member of the AQUIP's Economic Affairs Committee; Sonia Marcotte, Economist, Director of the AQUIP's Economic and Legal Affairs Committee. From Imperial Oil Limited: Simon Smith, Vice-President, Fuels Marketing, Products and Chemicals Division. From the “Coalition pour la défense des consommateurs de carburant du Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean”: Claude Girard, President; Jean-Pierre Benoît, Director. As Individual: Michael J. Ervin, President of MJ Ervin and Associates.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of the possible causes of the recent increase in the price of gasoline, and the significant negative effects that the increase is having on the economy, and can recommend appropriate corrective measures to the federal government.

René Blouin, Pierre Crevier and Sonia Marcotte each made an opening statement and answered questions.

Simon Smith made an opening statement and answered questions.

Claude Girard and Jean-Pierre Benoît each made an opening statement and answered questions.

Michael Ervin made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 5:32 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
