The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, the Chair, Bernard Patry, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Stéphane Bergeron, Murray Calder, Aileen Carroll, Bill Casey, Irwin Cotler, Stockwell Day, Art Eggleton, John Harvard, Francine Lalonde, Diane Marleau, Keith Martin, Deepak Obhrai, Bernard Patry and Karen Redman.

 

Acting Members present: Marlene Catterall for André Harvey, Joe Clark for Bill Casey and Svend Robinson for Alexa McDonough.

 

In attendance: Committees Directorate: Elizabeth B. Kingston, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 

Appearing: Hon. Wayne Easter, Solicitor General of Canada.

 

Witnesses: Canadian International Development Agency: Hau Sing Tse, Vice-President, Asia Branch; Paul Hunt, Vice-President, Africa and Middle East Branch. Department of the Solicitor General: Garry Loeppky, Deputy Commissioner, Operations, Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 6, 2003, the Committee resumed its study of relations with Muslim countries
 

Hau Sing Tse and Paul Hunt made statements and answered questions.

 

At 11:20 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:45 a.m., the sitting resumed.

 

At 12:00 the Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

 

It was agreed, — That the Committee authorize the Chair to organize a meeting or working meal with the Speaker and a delegation of the Portuguese Parliament during their official visit to Canada during the week of October 27, 2003.

 

At 12:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:06 p.m., the sitting resumed.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on September 18, 2003, the Committee resumed its consideration of cases involving the detention of Canadian citizens in certain foreign countries.
 

The Minister made a statement and with Deputy Commissionner Loeppky, answered questions.

 

At 1:03 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
