The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 11:02 a.m. this day, in Room 269 West Block, for the purpose of electing a Chair, pursuant to Standing Order 106(1).

 

Members of the Committee present: Stéphane Bergeron, Murray Calder, Aileen Carroll, Irwin Cotler, Art Eggleton, Mark Eyking, John Harvard, André Harvey, Francine Lalonde, Alexa McDonough and Charlie Penson.

 

Acting Members present: Cheryl Gallant for Deepak Obhrai and Alan Tonks for Karen Redman.

 

In attendance: Committees Directorate: Angela Crandall, Committee Clerk; Elizabeth B. Kingston, Committee Clerk. Library of Parliament: James Lee, Analyst; Gerald Schmitz, Principal.

 

Witnesses: McGill University: A. Üner Turgay, Director, Institute of Islamic Studies. University of Calgary: Tareq Y. Ismael, Professor of Political Sciences. Senate: Hon. Mobina Jaffer, Senator.

 
The Clerk of the Committee presided over the election of a Chair.
 

On motion of André Harvey, it was agreed, — That Bernard Patry be elected Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of John Harvard, it was agreed, — That Diane Marleau be elected as Goverment Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

On motion of Charlie Penson, it was agreed, — That Stockwell Day be elected as Opposition Vice-Chair of the Committee.

 

Bernard Patry, duly elected Chair of the Committee, took the Chair.

 
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), and the motion adopted by the Committee on February 6, 2003, the Committee resumed its study of relations with Muslim countries
 

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

 

At 12:51 p.m. the Committee proceeded to discuss its future business.

 

At 1:04 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
