Wednesday, May 8, 2002

The Sub-Committee on Children and Youth at Risk of the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met by videoconference at 3:27 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, John Godfrey, presiding.

Member(s) of the Sub-Committee present: John Godfrey and Alan Tonks.

Acting Member(s) present: Garry Breitkreyz for Larry Spencer.

Other Member(s) present: Nancy Karetak-Lindell.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Lyne Casavant, Research Officer.

Witness(es): From the Anishinaabe Mino-Ayaawin: Tracy Scott, Nursing Services Manager; Caroline Bercier, Tribal Family Health Nursing Officer. From the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs: Bonny Traverese, Daycare Coordinator. From the Sandy Bay Health Centre: Dorothy Lloyd, Coordinator. From the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations: Sheila Kay-Machiskinic, First Nations person from Southern Saskatchewan; Bev Peel, Children's Program. From the Teslin Tlingit Council: Carl Sidney, Deputy Chief; Kelly Morris, Director of Health & Social Programs. From the Ta'an Kwach'an Council: Brenda Sam.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2) and its Order of Reference from the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities, the Sub-Committee resumed its study on the status of aboriginal children living on and off reserves and on federal programs available to them (See Minutes of Proceedings of March 01, 2001 – Meeting No.06).

Tracey Scott, Bonny Traverese and Dorothy Lloyd made statements and answered questions.

Sheila Kay-Machiskinic and Bev Peel made statements and answered questions.

Kelly Morris and Brenda Sam made statements and with Carl Sidney, answered questions.

At 6:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
