Meeting No. 6

Thursday, March 22, 2001

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 9:10 a.m. this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Reg Alcock, Mauril Bélanger, Bev Desjarlais, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Marlene Jennings, Walt Lastewka, Charlie Penson, James Rajotte, Paddy Torsney and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Chuck Strahl for Preston Manning.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw and Daniel Brassard, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Coalition for Canadian Astronomy: Dr. Russell Taylor, President, Canadian Astronomical Society, Professor, University of Calgary; Peter Janson, Chair and Chief Executive Officer, AMEC Inc.; Prof. Rene Racine, Emeritus Professor, "Département de physique, Université de Montréal".

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), consideration of the Science and Technology Policies.

Charlie Penson moved, - That this Committee send for Mr. Jonas Prince to appear as a witness regarding his ownership of the shares in 161341 Canada Inc.

The Chair ruled that the ruling on the admissibility of the motion will be postponed to Tuesday, March 27, 2001.

And the question being put by the Chair:

Shall the ruling of the Chair be upheld?

And the result of the vote by show of hands, having been announced:

YEAS: 6; NAYS: 4;

Statement by the Chair:

"Since the decision of the Chair has not been negatived, I declare the decision sustained."

Dr. Russell Taylor and Peter Janson each made an opening statement and, with Prof. Rene Racine answered questions.

At 10:50 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
