Meeting No. 42

Wednesday, October 24, 2001

The Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology met at 3:20 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Larry Bagnell, Jocelyne Girard-Bujold, Walt Lastewka, Dan McTeague, James Rajotte, Brent St. Denis, Chuck Strahl, Paddy Torsney and Susan Whelan.

Acting Member present: Pat Martin for Bev Desjarlais.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Dan Shaw and Geoffrey P. Kieley, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From Democracy Watch: Duff Conacher, Coordinator. From the Public Interest Advocacy Centre: Michael Janigan, Executive Director and General Counsel. From the Canadian Federation of Independent Business: André Piché, Senior Policy Analyst, National Affairs; Stéphane Robichaud, Director, Provincial Affairs for New Brunswick and P.E.I. From the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute: Alain Perez, President; Tom Ryley, Executive Vice-President, Sunoco Inc., Suncor Energy Inc. From the Consumers' Association of Canada: David Croome, Chair, Trade Committee.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Thursday, May 3, 2001, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-23, An Act to amend the Competition Act and the Competition Tribunal Act (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, October 4, 2001, Meeting No. 37).

Michael Janigan and Duff Conacher each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 4:12 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 4:17 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Stéphane Robichaud, André Piché and Alain Perez each made an opening statement and with Tom Ryley answered questions.

At 5:34 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
