Meeting No. 34

Tuesday, October 23, 2001

The Standing Committee on Human Resources Development and the Status of Persons with Disabilities met at 11:03 a.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, Diane St-Jacques, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Raymonde Folco, Gurbax Malhi, Anita Neville, Joe Peschisolido, Carol Skelton, Larry Spencer, Diane St-Jacques.

Acting Member(s) present: Bob Speller for Judi Longfield, Marcel Gagnon for Paul Crête and Werner Schmidt for Dale Johnston.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Kevin Kerr, Julie Mackenzie and Bill Young, Research Officers.

Witness(es): From the Human Resources Development Canada: Paul Migus, Assistant Deputy Minister, Income Security Programs; Sue Pitts, Director, Old Age Security Policy, Income Security Programs; Nada Semaan, Director General, Program Policy & Planning, Income Security Programs. From the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency: David W. Miller, Assistant Commissioner, Assessment and collections Branch; Kathy Turner, Director general, Assessment & Collections Branch. From the Privacy Commissioner of Canada: George Radwanski, Privacy Commissioner.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a study on Guaranteed Income Supplement Under Subscription

On motion of Raymonde Folco, it was agreed, -- That John Godrey be Chair of the Sub-Committee on Children and Youth at Risk, established pursuant to Standing Order 108(1) and 108 (2) and to an order of the Committee of March 1st, 2001 and that the membership of the Sub-Committee be composed of nine (9) members or associate members of which five (5) shall be government members and four (4) shall be opposition members, to be struck following the usual consultations with the Whips and filed with the Clerk.

 

On motion of Anita Neville, it was agreed, -- That Carolyn Bennett be Chair of the Sub-Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, established pursuant to Standing Order 108(1) and 108 (2) and to an order of the Committee of March 1st, 2001 and that the membership of the Sub-Committee be composed of nine (9) members or associate members of which five (5) shall be government members and four (4) shall be opposition members, to be struck following the usual consultations with the Whips and filed with the Clerk.

 

Paul Migus and David Miller made opening statements and with other witnesses answered questions.

At 12:35 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:45 p.m., the sitting resumed.

George Radwanski made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:59 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
