The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: André Bachand, Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, James Lunney, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Carol Skelton, Yolande Thibeault, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Members present: Hedy Fry for Bob Speller.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier and Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Department of Health: Lise Lavoie, Senior Policy Analyst, Special Projects Division, Health Policy and Communications Branch; Ian Shugart, Assistant Deputy Minister, Health Policy and Communications Branch; Caroline Weber, Director General, Policy Planning and Priorities Directorate, From the Department of Justice: Glenn Rivard, Senior Legal Counsel.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, May 28, 2002, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-56, An Act respecting assisted human reproduction be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Health.

The Chair called Clause 1.

Ian Shugart made a statement and with Caroline Weber, Glenn Rivard and Lise Lavoie answered questions.

At 1:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
