Meeting No. 71

Thursday, April 25, 2002

The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:06 a.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Bonnie Brown, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Bonnie Brown, Jeannot Castonguay, Stan Dromisky, Réal Ménard, Rob Merrifield, Hélène Scherrer, Judy Sgro, Carol Skelton, Yolande Thibeault, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Members present: Bernard Bigras for Diane Bourgeois, Howard Hilstrom for James Lunney.

Other Members present: Karen Kraft Sloan.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Sonya Norris and Monique Hébert, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment: Kapil Khatter, Excutive Director. From the Canadian Institute of Child Health: Don Houston, Director, Environmental Programs. From the Canadian Public Health Association: Robert Cushman, Medical Officer of Health, City of Ottawa. From the Pollution Probe: Sandra Schwartz, Manager, Environment & Child Health Program.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-53, An Act to protect human health and safety and the environment by regulating products used for the control of pests (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, April 16, 2002, Meeting No. 66).

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 12:42 p.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in camera.

It was agreed, - That prior to the commencement of clause by clause consideration on Bill C-53, meetings of the Committee may include a number of Round Tables.

It was agreed, - That due to the large number of potential witnesses, individual presentations will be limited to a maximum length of five minutes.

At 1:13 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
