Meeting No. 15

Tuesday, May 29, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 9:09 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Cummins, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel.

Acting Member present: Ghyslain Fournier for Jean-Yves Roy.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the " Les Crevettes de Sept-îles inc.": Gilles Soucy, President. From the Canadian Food Inspection Agency: Cameron Prince, Director, Fish, Seafood and Production Division; Rhéo Ladouceur, Regional Director, Quebec Regional Office - Quebec Area.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), a meeting concerning hygiene conditions aboard shrimp vessels.

The Chair made opening remarks.

Cameron Prince made a statement.

Gilles Soucy made a presentation.

Cameron Prince, with Rhéo Ladouceur, and Gilles Soucy answered questions. 

On the motion of John Duncan, it was unanimously agreed, - That the Department of Fisheries and Oceans be asked to investigate the issue of on-board processing of shrimp with a view to regulatory or other action to forbid on-board cooking of shrimp for other than CFIA-registered on-board processing, as they have previously done for crab.

Lawrence O'Brien moved, - That Vote 1, less the amount of $242,113,000 voted in Interim Supply, carry.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on the following recorded vote:

YEAS: Sarkis Assadourian, Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel. — 7

NAYS: John Duncan, Peter Stoffer. — 2

Dominic LeBlanc moved , - That Vote 5, less the amount of $39,523,000 voted in Interim Supply, carry.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on the  following recorded vote:

YEAS: Sarkis Assadourian, Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel. — 7

NAYS: John Duncan, Peter Stoffer. — 2

Lawrence O'Brien moved, - That Vote 10, less the amount of $47,028,391.67 voted in Interim Supply, carry.

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on the following recorded vote:

YEAS: Sarkis Assadourian, Georges Farrah, Dominic LeBlanc, Bill Matthews, Lawrence O'Brien, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel. — 7

NAYS: John Duncan, Peter Stoffer. — 2

Lawrence O'Brien moved, - That the Chair report the Estimates to the House,

After debate, the question being put on the motion, it was agreed to on division.

At 10:41 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
