Meeting No. 12

Tuesday, May 8, 2001

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 7:03 p.m. this day, in the Highland Suite 7/8 of the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Gerald Keddy, Dominic LeBlanc, James Lunney, Peter Stoffer, Suzanne Tremblay, Tom Wappel.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: Faith Scattolon, Regional Director, Oceans and Environment Branch; Joe Arbour, Manager, Oceans and Coastal Management Division; Sophie Bastien-Daigle, Ocean Biologist, Oceans and Envirionment Branch. From Eskasoni Fish and Wildlife: Albert Marshall, Spokesperson. From theEnvironment Action Centre: Mark Butler, Marine Co-ordinator. From the Sierra Club of Canada: Helen Lofgren, Chair, Northeast Regional Conservation Committee, and Petroleum Issues Co-ordinator, Atlantic Coast Ecoregion Task Force. From the School of Resource and Environmental Studies, Dalhousie University: Joanne Weiss, Graduate Student; Susan Gass, Graduate Student.

Pursuant to Section 52 of the Oceans Act, the Committee commenced its review of the Act.

Faith Scattolon made an opening statement and, with Joe Arbour and Sophie Bastien-Daigle, answered questions.

Albert Marshall made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 8:49 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:55 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Mark Butler made an opening statement and answered questions.

Helen Lofgren, Joanne Weiss and Susan Gass made opening statements and answered questions.

At 10:42 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
