Wednesday, May 16, 2001

The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 3:30 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.

 

Members of the Committee present: Sue Barnes, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roy Cullen, Ken Epp, Roger Gallaway, Albina Guarnieri, Sophia Leung, Lorne Nystrom, Joe Peschisolido and Gary Pillitteri.

 

Acting Members present:  Lynn Myers for Nick Discepola and Pierrette Venne for Yvan Loubier.

 

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Blayne Haggart and Marc-André Pigeon, Researchers.

Appearing:: The Hon. Lawrence MacAulay, Solicitor General of Canada; The Hon. Martin Cauchon, Minister of National Revenue and Secretary of State, (Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec).

Witnesses: From the Canadian Security Intelligence Service: Ward P. Elcock, Director. From the Ministry of the Solicitor General of Canada: Paul E. Kennedy, Senior Assistant Deputy Solicitor General, Policing and Security Branch. From the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency: Bill McCloskey, Assistant Commissioner, Policy and Legislation Branch.

The Order of Reference dated Tuesday, May 1st, 2001, being now read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-16, An Act respecting the registration of charities and security information and to amend the Income Tax Act be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Finance.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The Ministers made statements and with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
