Meeting No. 78

Tuesday, May 7, 2002

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:02 a.m. this day, in the Regal Ballroom of the Hotel Georgia, Vancouver, British Columbia, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Harvard, Keith Martin.

Acting Member present: Yves Rocheleau for Francine Lalonde.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Fraser Institute: Fred McMahon, Director, Centre for Globalization; Gordon F. Gibson, Senior Fellow. From Doman Industries: Rick Doman, President and Chief Executive Officer; Bob Flitton, Manager, Governmental Affairs. From the Centre for Global Studies, University of Victoria: Gordon Smith, Director.  As Individual: Joan Russow, Former Sessional Lecturer in Global Issues, University of Victoria. From Simon Fraser University: Daniel Cohn, Professor of Political Science.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on North American Integration and Canada's Role in the Light of New Security Challenges and the study of the Agenda of the 2002 G8 Summit (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, October 16, 2001, Meeting No. 31).

Fred McMahon, Gordon F. Gibson, Rick Doman, Bob Flitton and Gordon Smith made statements and answered questions.

At 10:07 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in a video recorded session (Global Television Network).

At 10:46 a.m., the Committee resumed sitting in a non-video recorded session.

At 11:33 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:34 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Joan Russow and Daniel Cohn made statements and answered questions.

At 3:10 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
