Tuesday, April 16, 2002

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 3:34 p.m. this day, in Room 701, La Promenade Building, the Chair, Jean Augustine, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Jean Augustine, Aileen Carroll, Bill Casey, John Duncan, John Harvard, Marlene Jennings, Stan Keyes, Francine Lalonde, Diane Marleau, Pat O'Brien, Pierre Paquette, Bernard Patry, Svend Robinson.

Acting Member present: Stockwell Day for Brian Pallister.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Appearing: The Honourable Pierre Pettigrew, Minister of International Trade.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Leonard J. Edwards, Deputy Minister for International Trade; Claude Caron, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister (Portfolio: Corporate Services, Passport and Consular Affairs); Claude Carrière, Director General, Trade Policy I, General Trade Policy Bureau.

The Order of Reference of February 28, 2002 was read as follows:

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(5), the Main Estimates for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2003, were deemed referred to the several Standing Committees of the House as follows:

To the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade

Foreign Affairs, Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, L30, L35, 40, 45, 50 and 55

Pursuant to Standing Order 81(6), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of the Main Estimates for 2002-2003: Votes 1, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, L30, L35, 40, 45, 50 and 55 under Foreign Affairs and International Trade referred to the Committee on Thursday, February 28, 2002.

The Chair called Vote 1.

The Minister made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 5:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
