Thursday, February 28, 2002

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:07 a.m. this day, in Montagu Room of the Saint John Trade & Convention Centre in Saint John, New Brunswick, the Chair, Jean Augustine, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, George S. Baker, Aileen Carroll.

Acting Member present: Yves Rocheleau for Francine Lalonde.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Gerald Schmitz, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the New Brunswick Federation of Labour: Blair Doucet, President; Member of the Executive Council; Bill Farren, Member of the Executive Council. From the Canadian Labour Congress: Dee Dee Daigle, Political Action Representative. From the University of New Brunswick in Saint-John: Rod Hill, Professor of Economics. From the New Brunswick New Democratic Party: Elizabeth Weir, MLA, Leader. From the Saint John Board of Trade: John Furey, Second Vice-president; Gerry O'Brien, Immediate Past President.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study on North American Integration and Canada's Role in the Light of New Security Challenges and the study of the Agenda of the 2002 G8 Summit (See minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, October 16, 2001, Meeting No.31).

Blair Doucet, Bill Farren, Dee Dee Daigle, Rod Hill and Elizabeth Weir made statements and answered questions.

At 11:39 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:13 p.m., the sitting resumed in a televised session.

Gerry O’Brien and John Furey made statements and answered questions.

At 2:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
