Meeting No. 48

Tuesday, December 4, 2001

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in camera at 3:45 p.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, John Duncan, Bill Graham, John Harvard, Stan Keyes, Diane Marleau, Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Pierre Paquette, Bernard Patry.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee, Gerald Schmitz, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed its study of North American Integration and Canada's Role in the Light of New Security Challenges (See Minutes of Proceedings of Tuesday, October 16, 2001, Meeting no. 31).

The Committee discussed its future business.

It was agreed, --That, pursuant to the programme of the document Agenda Planning Note and Preliminary Work Plan, Fall-Winter Session 2001-2002, adopted on October 16, 2001, the Committee undertake a study of the Agenda of the June 2002 G-8 Summit.

It was agreed, --That in relation to the Committee’s studies on North American Integration and Security and the Agenda for the June 2002 G-8 Summit, an itinerary and budget for sixteen Members to participate in hearings in Quebec and Atlantic Canada and travel to Washington and Mexico City during two separate weeks in either February or March, 2002, be adopted and that for the purpose of the hearings the Committee be divided into two groups of a maximum of eight Members each to cover the week devoted to Atlantic Canada and Quebec.

The Committee considered a draft report.

At 4:38 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
