MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 28

Thursday, September 27, 2001

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met in camera at 9:13 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Bill Graham, Stan Keyes, Keith Martin, Pat O'Brien, Pierre Paquette, Bernard Patry, Svend Robinson.

Acting Members present: Mac Harb for John Harvard; Brain Pallister for Monte Solberg; Antoine Dubé for Francine Lalonde.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: James Lee and Peter Berg.

At 9:13 a.m., the Committee proceeded to sit in public.

At 9:14 a.m., the Committee observed one minute of silence in memory of the victims of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 in the United States and in reflection of the work of the Committee and its members, particularly in the light of tragic events in Switzerland earlier today.

The Committee discussed its future business.

On a motion by Mac Harb, it was agreed, --That the Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment hold hearings on Canada-United States border crossing issues.

On a motion by Pierre Paquette, seconded by Jean Augustine, it was agreed,

--That the Committee, with the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, meet with the Delegation for Relations with Canada of the European Parliament on Tuesday, 16 October, 9:00 a.m;

--That the Committee hold a joint meeting with the Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food to mark World Food Day on Tuesday, 16 October at 3:30 p.m.

--That the Sub-Committee on International Trade, Trade Disputes and Investment invite Mr. Juan Somavia, Director General of the International Labour Organization, to appear before it on Wednesday, 17 October at 3:30 p.m.

--That the Committee hold a Joint Meeting with the Political Affairs Committee of the Council of Europe on Tuesday, 23 October at 9:00 a.m.

At 9:57 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
