Meeting No. 13

The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade met at 9:06 a.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Chair, Bill Graham, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Jean Augustine, Colleen Beaumier, Bill Casey, Bill Graham, John Harvard, Stan Keyes, Diane Marleau, Pat O'Brien, Denis Paradis, Bernard Patry.

Acting Member present: Yves Rocheleau for Francine Lalonde.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: James Lee.

Witnesses: From the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: Ron Halpin, Director General, Central, East and South Europe Bureau (RBD); Ann Collins, Director, Eastern Europe Division; Wendy Gilmour, Deputy Director, Belarus, Caucasus, Central Asia, Moldova, Ukraine (REE).

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), examination of Canada's Foreign Policy Interests in the South Caucasus and Central Asia.

Ron Halpin made a statement.

The Chair presented the Second Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure which is as follows:

SECOND REPORT OF THE SUB-COMMITTEE ON AGENDA AND PROCEDURE

Your Sub-Committee met on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 to consider the future business of the Committee and agreed to make the following recommendations:

It was agreed, -- That the Committee hold meetings as follows:

  • One additional meeting on the Free Trade of the Americas Agreement
  • Three meetings with Ministers on the Main Estimates, 2001-2002
  • One additional meeting on the South Caucasus and Central Asia study
  • Four meetings on Bill C-6, An Act to amend the International Boundary Water Treaty Act; once it is referred to Committee
  • One meeting with the Canadian Ambassador for Disarmament

On motion of Bernard Patry, it was agreed; - That the Second Report of the Sub-Committee on Agenda and Procedure be concurred in.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 10:40 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
