GOVERNMENT ORDERS

The Order was read for the third reading of Bill C-12, An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (Part II) in respect of occupational health and safety, to make technical amendments to the Canada Labour Code (Part I) and to make consequential amendments to other Acts.

Pursuant to Standing Order 45, the House resumed consideration of the motion of Mr. Martin (Esquimalt -- Juan de Fuca), seconded by Mr. Lunn (Saanich -- Gulf Islands), -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should convene a meeting of ``like-minded nations'' in order to develop a multilateral plan of action to reform international organizations (e.g. International Monetary Fund, World Bank, United Nations) so that they can identify the precursors of conflict and establish multilateral conflict-prevention initiatives. (Private Members' Business M-30)

The House proceeded to the taking of the deferred recorded division on the amendment of Mr. Grewal (Surrey Central), seconded by Mr. Hanger (Calgary Northeast), -- That the motion be amended by deleting all the words after the word ``should'' and substituting the following:

Ms. Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North Centre), seconded by Mr. Gruending (Saskatoon -- Rosetown -- Biggar), moved, -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should take immediate steps to implement a labelling process that will make consumers aware of all genetically modified produce and components in processed foods. ROYAL ASSENT

A Message was received from the Honourable John Major, Puisne Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada, in his capacity as Deputy Governor General, desiring the immediate attendance of the House in the Senate.

Accordingly, the Speaker, with the Commons, proceeded to the Senate.

The Commons returned to the Chamber.

Whereupon, the Speaker reported that, when the Commons had been in the Senate, the Honourable the Deputy Governor General was pleased to give, in Her Majesty's name, the Royal Assent to the following Bills:

    C-10, An Act to amend the Municipal Grants Act -- Chapter No. 8;
    C-2, An Act respecting the election of members to the House of Commons, repealing other Acts relating to elections and making consequential amendments to other Acts -- Chapter No. 9.

The House resumed consideration of the motion of Ms. Wasylycia-Leis (Winnipeg North Centre), seconded by Mr. Gruending (Saskatoon -- Rosetown -- Biggar), -- That, in the opinion of this House, the government should take immediate steps to implement a labelling process that will make consumers aware of all genetically modified produce and components in processed foods. The debate continued.
