The Clerk of the Committee: Honourable members, I see a quorum. Your first order of business is to elect a chair, and I'm ready to receive a motion to that effect.

Mrs. Karetak-Lindell.

Mrs. Nancy Karetak-Lindell (Nunavut, Lib.): I'd like to nominate Carolyn Bennett for chair.

The Clerk: All those in favour?

(Motion agreed to)

The Clerk: I declare Carolyn Bennett duly elected chair of this subcommittee and invite her to take the chair.

The Chair (Mrs. Carolyn Bennett (St. Paul's, Lib.)): Thank you.

We hope we will carry on the good work of this truly perfect and best committee on the Hill. It is good that it is the eve of the International Day of Disabled Persons that we get this committee up and running.

Routine motions. I need a mover for the Library of Parliament research officer.

Mr. Joe Jordan (Leeds—Grenville, Lib.): What would that motion look like if I were to move it?

The Chair: It would be that the subcommittee retain the services of one or more research officers—

Mr. Joe Jordan: So moved.

The Chair: All in favour?

(Motion agreed to)

The Chair: I think we will stand down both the allocation of time for questioning and witness expenses until we have more opposition present. We wouldn't want to make any prescriptive decisions.

Mrs. Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral (Laval Centre, BQ): Why not? Sometimes we should.

The Chair: Under other business, I think we would like desperately to have at least one, if not two, meetings before we break so that we can plan the spring. We're going to see if next Wednesday or Thursday afternoon would be better for committee members.

Thanks, Judy.

Ms. Judy Sgro (York West, Lib.): You're welcome. Anytime.

Mr. Joe Jordan: Don't say that or it will be all the time.

Mrs. Madeleine Dalphond-Guiral: It's not easy to have someone on Thursday.

The Chair: We'll see what we can do. The regular committee is vacating its regular spot on Tuesday morning, so the children-at-risk committee is going there. That frees up the regular time for the children-at-risk committee and we might be able to move there.

I'm supposed to remind you that the minister is coming to the parent committee next Thursday morning at 11 a.m. to discuss disabilities.

The meeting is adjourned.
