Meeting No. 34

Wednesday, May 17, 2000

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 6:31 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: David Chatters, Carolyn Parrish, Carmen Provenzano, Julian Reed, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Members present: Ghislain Fournier for Serge Cardin and Peter Mancini for Yvon Godin.

Associate Member present: Michelle Dockrill.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Cape Breton District Labour Council: Kevin McNamara, President. From the Cape Breton Regional Municipality: David Muise, Mayor. From Cape Breton Miners Development Co-operative Ltd.: Kevin Murphy, Vice-President. From Northside Futures: Kathy Baker, President. From Devco Pensioners: Sam Boutilier, President. From United Families: Edna Budden, President. From Nova Scotia Power Inc.: Murray Cookican, Vice-President, Public Affairs; Peter Kinnear, Director, Government Relations and Economic Development.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, May 8, 2000, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act to authorize the divestiture of the assets of, and to dissolve, the Cape Breton Development Corporation, to amend the Cape Breton Development Corporation Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, May 16, 2000 , Meeting No. 32).

The witnesses from Northside Futures, Devco Pensioners, United Families and David Muise each made a statement and together answered questions.

At 7:56 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:07 p.m., the sitting resumed.

At 8:09 p.m., Julian Reed (Vice-Chair) took the Chair.

Kevin McNamara, Kevin Murphy, John Hugh Edwards and Murray Coolican each made a statement and answered questions.

At 9:20 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
