Meeting No. 33

Tuesday, May 16, 2000

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 7:00 p.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Gilles Bernier, Serge Cardin, David Chatters, John Duncan, Yvon Godin, Tony Ianno, Ghislain Lebel, Carolyn Parrish, Carmen Provenzano, Julian Reed, Werner Schmidt, Guy St-Julien, Brent St. Denis, Tony Valeri and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Members present: Judi Longfield for Carolyn Parrish; Peter Mancini for Yvon Godin.

Associate Member Present: Michelle Dockrill.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Grant Purves, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the United Mine Workers of America: Steve Drake, President, District 26. From the Canadian Union of Public Employees: Leo Gracie, Vice-President, Local 2046. From the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in Canada: Ricky Wiseman, General Chairman, Local 684. From the Canadian Auto Workers Union: Kenneth Greene, Vice-President, Local 4504.

Pursuant to its Order of Reference of Monday, May 8, 2000, the Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-11, An Act to authorize the divestiture of the assets of, and to dissolve, the Cape Breton Development Corporation, to amend the Cape Breton Development Corporation Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts (See Minutes of Proceedings, Tuesday, May 16, 2000 , Meeting No. 32).

Each of the witnesses made an opening statement.

At 7:58 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 8:05 p.m., the sitting resumed.

The witnesses answered questions.

At 8:47 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
