Meeting No. 25

Tuesday, May 2, 2000

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 11:08 a.m. this day, in Room 362, East Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Serge Cardin, David Chatters, John Duncan, Yvon Godin, Werner Schmidt, Brent St. Denis and Joseph Volpe.

Acting Members present: Joe Comuzzi for Guy St-Julien.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean-Luc Bourdages and Tim Williams, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From J. D. Irving Ltd.: Jim Irving, President; Blake Brunsdon, Chief Forester. From the Standards Council of Canada: Stephan Janhager, Senior Program Officer, EMS Registration. From the Quality Management Institute: Peter Johnson, Manager, Registration Development. From the Buchanan Group of Companies: Yves Fricot, Vice-President & General Counsel; Glen Swant, Head Forester.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study of Canadian Forest Management Practices as an International Trade Issue.

Jim Irving and Blake Brunsdon each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 12:05 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:15 p.m., the sitting resumed.

By unanimous consent, on motion of David Chatters, it was agreed, - That the Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations request an Order of Reference from the House of Commons to travel from May 7th to 12, 2000, to Sault-Ste-Marie (ON), Thunder Bay (ON), Baie Comeau (QC), Rimouski (QC) and Bathurst (N.B.) for its consideration of Forest Practices in Canada as an International Trade Issue.

Stephan Janhager and Peter Johnson each made an opening statement and answered questions.

At 1:01 p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 1:04 p.m., the sitting resumed.

Yves Fricot and Glen Swant each made and opening statement and answered questions.

At 2:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
