MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 22

Thursday, April 13, 2000

The Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage met in a televised session at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Clifford Lincoln, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Mauril Bélanger, Paul Bonwick, Pierre de Savoye, Wendy Lill, Rick Limoges, Clifford Lincoln, Inky Mark, Mark Muise, Alex Shepherd.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Joseph Jackson, Researcher. As Consultants: Kevin Burns and David Black.

Witnesses: From the Chapters Inc.: Larry Stevenson, President and Chief Executive Officer. From the Pegasus Wholesale: Denis Zook, President and CEO. From the Mosaic Press: Howard Aster, Publisher. From the "Groupe Renaud-Bray": Carole Morency, Director, Communications.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), Consideration of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

Larry Stevenson, Howard Aster made opening statements and answered questions.

Denis Zook and Carole Morency made opening statements and answered questions.

It was agreed,- That the meetings for the subject-matter of Bill C-224 take place in one day with the exception of the appearance of the Canadian Museum of Civilisation.

It was agreed,- That the officials from the Department of Canadian Heritage be invited to appear before the Committee on the topic of the Canadian Book Publishing Industry.

It was agreed,- That the Minister of Canadian Heritage be invited to appear before the Committee on Main Estimates 1999-2000.

It was agreed,- That the framework of the Report on Canadian Book Publishing Industry be distributed to the Members the week of May 8th, and that a first draft of the report be circulated to the members the week of May 15th, 2000; and

- That the Researchers consult the members individually on the draft report.

It was agreed,- That the consultants be permitted to visit the warehouse for Pegasus Wholesale.

At 1:05 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
