Tuesday, November 30, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met at 11:10 a.m. this day, in Room 308, West Block, the Chair, Lynn Myers, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Reed Elley, Gurmant Grewal, Ovid Jackson, Bill Matthews, Réal Ménard, Lynn Myers, Greg Thompson, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier; Sonya Norris, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Council for Health Research in Canada: David Hill, Chair. From the Canadian Consortium for Research: Dr. John C. Service, Chair. From the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation: Jonathan Lomas, Executive Director. From the "Fonds de la recherche en santé du Québec": Dr. Pierre Boyle, Executive Director. From the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada: Robert J. Giroux, President and Chief Executive Officer. From the Coalition for Biomedical and Health Research: Dr. Barry D. McLennan, Chair. From the "Institut des recherches cliniques de Montréal": Dr. Rafik-Pierre Sékaly, Director, Laboratory of Immunology.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), information session on the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

The Order of Reference dated November 29, 1999, being read as follows:

ORDERED, -- That Bill C-13, An Act to establish the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, to repeal the Medical Research Council of Canada Act and to make consequential amendments to other Acts be now read a second time and referred to the Standing Committee on Health.

The Chair called Clause 1.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 1:35 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
