Meeting No. 5

Wednesday, November 24, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met at 3:44 p.m. this day, in Room 371, West Block, the Chair, Lynn Myers, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Yvon Charbonneau, Reed Elley, Ovid Jackson, Keith Martin, Réal Ménard, Lynn Myers, Bernard Patry, Paul Szabo, Greg Thompson, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Gary Lunn for Gurmant Grewal

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier; Sonya Norris, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Interim Governing Council: Dr. Henry Friesen, Chair, President, Medical Research Council; Dorothy Lamont, Vice-Chair, CEO, Canadian Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute of Canada; Eric M. Maldoff, Vice-Chair, Partner, Heenan Blaikie, Montreal; Yves Morin, Member, Member, Medical Research Council of Canada and Emeritus Professor, Faculty of Medicine; Dr. Tom Brzutowski, Member, President, Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.

In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 108(2), information session on Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

It was agreed, by a show of hands, that the Committee instruct the Clerk to contact the Minister of Health's office to ascertain his availabilities to appear on the Supplementary Estimates (A), for the year 1999-2000.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 5:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
