Meeting No. 45

Thursday, March 30, 2000

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 8:30 a.m. this day, in Room 536, Wellington Building, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Sarkis Assadourian, Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, John Duncan, Wayne Easter, Bill Gilmour, Gerald Keddy, Marcel Proulx, Carmen Provenzano, Lou Sekora and Peter Stoffer.

Acting Members present: John Richardson for Nancy Karetak-Lindell; Hec Clouthier for Lawrence O'Brien.

Other Member present: Charles Hubbard.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness: From the Department of Fisheries and Oceans: David Bevan, Director General, Conservation and Protection Directorate.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

The witness made an opening statement and answered questions.

Gerald Keddy moved, That the Committee request the appearance of Chief Federal Representative James MacKenzie and Assistant Federal Representative Gilles Thériault before the Standing Committee at a time prior to the two-week recess of Parliament on April 15th.

After debate thereon the question being put on the motion, it was negatived on the following recorded decision:
