Friday, November 26, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 1:16 p.m. this day, at the Rodd Miramichi River Lodge and Conference Centre in Miramichi, New Brunswick, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, Wayne Easter, Lawrence O'Brien, Paul Steckle and Peter Stoffer.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es): From the "Association des crabiers du Nord-est": Jean Gauvin, Director General; Paul Noel, Vice-President. From the Eel Ground First Nation: George Ginnish, Chief; Eugen Patles, Council Member; Steve Ginnish, Council Member. From the Burnt Church First Nation: Larry Dedam, Councillor; Alex Dedam, Comptroller. From the "Fédération régionale acadienne des pêcheurs professionnels": Jean Saint-Cyr, Director General; Joel Gionet, President. From the Atlantic Salmon Federation: Stephen Chase, Vice President, Government Affairs; Danny Bird, Regional Director for New Brunswick.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 3:38 o'clock p.m. the sitting was suspended.

At 3:46 o'clock p.m. the sitting resumed.

At 4:50 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
