Wednesday, November 24, 1999

The Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans met at 1:05 p.m. this day, at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax, the Chair, Wayne Easter, presiding.

Member(s) of the Committee present: Yvan Bernier, John Cummins, Wayne Easter, Bill Matthews, Charlie Power, Carmen Provenzano and Peter Stoffer.

Other Member present: Mark Muise.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Alan Nixon, Research Officer.

Witness(es): From the Mi'Kmaq Fish and Wildlife Commission: Chris Milley, Executive Co-Director. From the Acadian Fish Processors: Richard D'Entremont, President and General Manager. From the Atlantic Policy Congress: Chief John G. Paul, Treaty Mediator; Paul Prosper, Legal Counsel; Doug Brown, Legal Counsel.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), study on the implications of the September 17th, 1999 Supreme Court decision on R. v. Marshall on the Management of fisheries in the Atlantic Region.

The witnesses made opening statements and answered questions.

At 3:00 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
