The Standing Committee on Finance met at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 269, West Block, the Vice-Chair, Nick Discepola, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Carolyn Bennett, Roy Cullen, Nick Discepola, Ken Epp, Yvan Loubier and the Hon. Lorne Nystrom.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Blayne Haggart, Researcher; Marion Wrobel, Senior Analyst. From Committees Directorate: Catherine Barrette, Procedural Clerk.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Bankers' Association: Mike Pedersen, Chairman, (Senior Executive Vice-President, Retail and Small Business Banking, CIBC); R. Alan Young, Vice-President, Policy; Raymond Protti, President and Chief Executive Officer. From the Credit Union Central of Canada: Bill Knight, President and Chief Executive Officer; Brian Topp, Senior Vice-President & Corporate Secretary.

The Committee resumed consideration of Bill C-38, An Act to establish the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and to amend certain Acts in relation to financial institutions (See Minutes of Proceedings, Thursday, September 28, 2000, Meeting No. 81).

Mike Pedersen and Bill Knight made statements and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 4:51 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
