The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food met at 12:16 p.m., this day, in Room 112-N, Centre Block, the Chair, John Harvard, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Hélène Alarie, Mark Assad, Rick Borotsik, Murray Calder, John Harvard, Howard Hilstrom, Gar Knutson, Larry McCormick, Joe McGuire, Dick Proctor, Gerry Ritz, Paul Steckle, Rose-Marie Ur.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Frédéric Forge, Researcher; Jean-Denis Fréchette, Economist.

Appearing: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: The Hon. Lyle Vanclief, Minister, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada; The Hon. Andy Mitchell, Secretary of State, (Rural Development) (Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario).

Witnesses: From the Department of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada: Frank Claydon, Deputy Minister; Diane Vincent, Associate Deputy Minister; Douglas D. Hedley, Senior Executive Director, Policy Branch.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Commitee resumed its study of the effectiveness of long-term safety nets and other national initiatives to provide the stability and environment necessary for stable growth in the agricultural industry.

Hon. Lyle Vanclief, made an opening statement, and with other witnesses, answered questions.

At 1:37 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
