Meeting No. 57

Tuesday, March 16, 1999

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met in a televised session at 3:35 p.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: John Finlay, Paul Forseth, Mac Harb, Lynn Myers, Beth Phinney, and John Williams.

Acting Members present: Lou Sekora for Steve Mahoney; Lee Morrison for Philip Mayfield; Michel Guimond for Serge Cardin; and Bev Desjarlais for Lorne Nystrom.

Other Member present: Bill Casey.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean Dupuis, Research Officer.

Witness(es):From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Shahid Minto, Assistant Auditor General; Basia Gadomski-Ruta, Principal, Audit Operations Branch; From Transport Canada: Margaret Bloodworth, Deputy Minister; Louis Ranger, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy Group; Ronald Sully, Assistant Deputy Minister, Programs and Divesture Group; and Ralph Jones, Director, Surface Program.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to consider Chapter 25 (Transport Canada - Investments in Highways) of the December 1998 Report of the Auditor General of Canada.

Denis Desautels and Margaret Bloodworth each made an opening statement and, with Ronald Sully, Louis Ranger, Ralph Jones, Basia Gadomski-Ruta and Shahid Minto, answered questions.

At 5:23 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
