MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS

Meeting No. 51

Thursday, February 4, 1999

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met in camera at 3:52 p.m. this day, in Room 209, West Block, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Serge Cardin, Ivan Grose, Mac Harb, Lynn Myers, Gilles-A. Perron, Beth Phinney, and John Williams.

Acting Members present: Colleen Beaumier for Mark Assad; and Jim Abbott for Philip Mayfield.

In attendance: From the Parliamentary Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Jean Dupuis and Brian O'Neal, Research Officers.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee resumed its consideration of a draft report on Chapter 10 (Canadian Human Rights Commission, Human Rights Tribunal Panel) of the September 1998 Report of the Auditor General of Canada

The Committee resumed its consideration of a draft report.

It was agreed, - That the Chair, on behalf of the the Committee, write to the Chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, urging that Committee, as recommended in its Twenty-first Report to the House, to undertake a thorough review of the Canadian Human Rights Act, the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal, taking into account the concerns and recommendations of the Auditor General of Canada as expressed in Chapter 10 of his September 1998 Report to the House of Commons.

It was agreed, - That the draft report, as amended, be adopted as the Twenty-first Report of the Committee.

It was agreed, - That the Chair be authorized to make such grammatical and editorial changes to the Report as may be necessary without changing the substance of the Report.

Ordered, - That the Chair of the Committee present the Report to the House of Commons.

At 3:54 p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
