The Standing Committee on Public Accounts met in a televised meeting at 3 :33 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 253 - D, the Chair, John Williams, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Mark Assad, Sue Barnes, Elinor Caplan, Odina Desrochers, Gurmant Grewal, Ivan Grose, Steve Mahoney, Philip Mayfield, Lynn Myers, Andrew Telegdi, Elsie Wayne and John Williams.
Acting Member present: Jocelyne Girard-Bujold for René Laurin.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Brian O’Neal and Jean Dupuis, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: L. Denis Desautels, Auditor General; and Shahid Minto, Assistant Auditor General. From Revenue Canada: Robert Wright, Deputy Minister; John Kowalski, Director General, Audit Directorate; and Bill Boston, Director General, Financial Administration Directorate, Finance and Administration Branch. From the Department of Finance : Paul-Henri Lapointe, Assistant Deputy Minister, Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch; and Pete DeVries, Director, Fiscal Policy, Economic and Fiscal Policy Branch.
Pursuant to Standing Order 108(3)(e), the Committee proceeded to the consideration of Chapters 31 and 32 of the December 1997 Report of the Auditor General of Canada (Revenue Canada -- The Financial Management Regime; Revenue Canada and Department of Finance -- Understanding Changes in Tax Revenues: GST).
L. Denis Desautels, Robert Wright and Paul-Henri Lapointe made opening statements.
It was agreed,- That the text of the opening statement submitted by Robert Wright be appended to this day’s evidence.
The witnesses answered questions.
At 5 :28 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
