MINUTES OF PROCEEDING
(Meeting No. 32)

Tuesday, May 5, 1998

The Standing Committee on Natural Resources and Government Operations met at 11:00 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 308, West Block, the Chair, Brent St. Denis, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Réginald Bélair, Gilles Bernier, Gerry Byrne, Jim Gouk, Ovid L. Jackson, Jerry Pickard, Darrel Stinson, Brent St. Denis and Bob Wood.

Substitute Members present: Joe Jordan for Carmen Provenzano, Michelle Dockrill for Yvon Godin.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament
: Jack Stilborn, Research Officer.

Witnesses: From the Office of the Auditor General of Canada: Denis Desautels, Auditor General of Canada; Jacques Goyer, Principal. From Treasury Board Secretariat: Cheryl Fraser, Assistant Secretary, Labour Relations and Human Resource Management Division; Richard J. Neville, Assistant Secretary, Expenditure Management Sector.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), examination of Chapters 1 and 2 (Expenditures and Work Force Reductions in the Public Service and in Selected Departments) of the Report of April 1998 of the Auditor General of Canada.

The witnesses made statements and answered questions.

At 12:13 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 12:15 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed, in camera.

The Committee considered its future business.

Notice was given -- That the motion adopted by the Committee on April 23, 1998, concerning the study of the operations of DEVCO be rescinded.

Debate arose thereon.

At 12:40 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
