(Meeting No. 6)

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1997

The Standing Committee on Industry met at 9:07 o’clock a.m., this day, in room 371, West Block, the Chair, Susan Whelan, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Eugène Bellemare, Bonnie Brown, Tony Ianno, Marlene Jennings, Francine Lalonde, Walt Lastewka, Ian Murray, Jim Pankiw, Janko Peric, Werner Schmidt, Alex Shepherd and Susan Whelan.

In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Antony Jackson, Daniel Brassard and Nathalie Pothier, Research Officers.

Witnesses: From the Canadian Bankers’ Association: John McCallum, Senior Vice-President & Chief Economist, Royal Bank; Kelly Shaughnessy, Senior Vice-President, Small Business Banking, CIBC; Anne Sutherland, Senior Vice-President, Small & Medium Sized Enterprises, Royal Bank; John Leckie, Senior Vice-President, Business Banking Services, Toronto Dominion Bank; Dieter Jentsch, Senior Vice-President, Canadian Commercial Banking, The Bank of Nova Scotia; Jean Pierre Guindon, Manager, Corporate Credit Services, National Bank of Canada; Lynda Brochu, Vice-President, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises, Bank of Montreal; William (Bill) McLaney, Vice-President, Credit, Honkong Bank of Canada. Pursuant to Standing Order 108(2), the Committee commenced a study of small business access to capital and bank loans.

Kelly Shaughnessy and John McCallum each made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

Ian M. Lightstone made a statement and, with the other witnesses, answered questions.

At 12:05 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
