Tuesday, March 23, 1999

The Standing Committee on Health met in a televised session at 9:12 a.m. this day, in Room 253-D, Centre Block, the Chair, Joseph Volpe, presiding.

Members of the Committee present: Elinor Caplan, Gurmant Grewal, Ovid Jackson, Maria Minna, Pauline Picard, Karen Redman, Rose-Marie Ur, Maurice Vellacott, Judy Wasylycia-Leis.

Acting Member present: Keith Martin for Reed Elley.

In attendance: From the Library of Parliament: Nancy Miller Chenier; Sonya Norris, Research Officer.

Witnesses:From the "Organizacion Nacional de Trasplantes": Dr. Blanca Miranda, National Transplant Coordinator; From The Partnership for Organ Donation: Carol Beasley, Managing Director; From the Donor Action Foundation: Celia Wight, Manager; From the United Network for Organ Sharing: Dr. William W. Pfaff, President; From the National Coordinating Committee on Organ and Tissue Donation and Distribution: Elizabeth Barker, Co-Chair and Director of Acute Care Programs, Nova Scotia Department of Health; Dr. Philip Belitsky, Co-Chair and Professor of Urology, Dalhousie University; From Alberta Health: Prudence Taylor, Project Team Leader, Health Strategies Division.

Pursuant to Standing Order 108 (2), the Committee resumed consideration of its study on the State of Organ and Tissue Donation in Canada. (See Minutes of Proceedings dated Tuesday, December 1, 1998).

Dr. Miranda, Celia Wight, Carol Beasley and Dr. William Pfaff each made statements and answered questions.

At 10:34 a.m., the sitting was suspended.

At 11:08 a.m., the sitting resumed.

At 11:53 a.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
