MINUTES OF PROCEEDING
Monday, November 3, 1997
The Standing Committee on Finance met in a televised session at 3:38 o’clock p.m., this day, in Room 237-C, Centre Block, the Chair, Maurizio Bevilacqua, presiding.
Members of the Committee present: Mark Assad, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Roger Gallaway, Dick Harris, Yvan Loubier, Gary Pillitteri, Karen Redman, Gerry Ritz, Torsney and Tony Valeri.
Acting Members present: Diane Ablonczy for Monte Solberg; John McKay for Paul Szabo to 3:47 p.m.; John McKay for David Iftody from 3:47 p.m.; Paul Crête for Gilles A. Perron; John Solomon for Nelson Riis.
In attendance: From the Research Branch of the Library of Parliament: Richard Domingue and Marion Wrobel,, Research Officers.
Witnesses: From the Learning Disabilities Association of Canada: James Horan, President. From the Canadian Federation of University Women: Betty Bayless, President; Nora Kudrenecky, Legislation Director. From the Canadian Teachers’ Federation: Harvey Weiner, Deputy Secretary General; John Staple, Director, Economic Services. From the Canadian Federation of Students: Brad Lavigne, National President. From the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB): Vangelis Nikias, National Director, Government Relations and International Issues.
In accordance with its mandate under Standing Order 83.1, the Committee resumed its Pre-Budget Consultation Study. (See Minutes of Proceedings of Wednesday, October 15, 1997, Meeting No. 3).
The witnesses participating in the Round Table made statements and answered questions.
At 4:51 o’clock p.m., the sitting was suspended.
At 4:56 o’clock p.m., the sitting resumed.
Diane Ablonczy moved, --That the Standing Committee on Finance invite and bring Mr. José Penira to appear as a witness on the issue of Bill C-2, now being studied by the Committee.
Roger Gallaway moved, --That the motion be amended to read as follows: "That this Committee defer voting on the main motion until November 4th at 5:00 p.m. when the Clerk of the Committee shall have determined whether there are any Canadian experts on the Chilian pension plan available to appear on Bill C-2."
An debate thereon, the amended motion was adopted.
At 5:17 o’clock p.m., the Committee adjourned to the call of the Chair.
